What we’ve been up to making music!
Lara MacMillan, B. Mus., B. Ed.
Lara received her Bachelor of Music (Piano) from Mount Allison University and her Bachelor of Education (Music/Drama) from the University of Windsor. After graduating she studied voice and vocal technique with Peggy Dwyer (Windsor), Elizabeth Pomes (RCM), David Dunbar (the “Bel Canto” method of Cornelius Reid), Shannon Gunn (Jazz), and Diane Lewarne (music theatre). Lara has worked at the Banff Centre, The Canadian Music Centre, and TVOntario. From 1997-2011 she was a classroom teacher with the Toronto District School Board in the Performing Arts (vocal, music theatre, drama, choral, instrumental/band, and guitar). In September 2010, she established The MacMillan Music Studio in Stratford for private and group instruction in piano, voice, guitar, ukulele, music theory and songwriting.
An avid singer-songwriter and performer with two full length CDs to her credit (Miss Mercury (2008) and Lara MacMillan (2013), Lara has been experimenting with her storytelling in a more theatrical way for a number of years now. Since 2014 she has been creating theatre pieces and touring them to Fringe Festivals in Ontario. Her most recent effort, Grade 8, was an unqualified success earning her high praise from audiences and critics alike.
Music Lessons should be fun and engaging. My approach to teaching provately is to apply my formal education (cloassical background), along with my general enthusiasm for and experience with all types of music to assist my students in playing, singing, and writing music that makes them feel good and allows them to express themselves creatively.
All musical styles are taught, from Classical to Folk, Pop to Blues. All ages and skill levels are welcome.
Ultimately, I want to help students achieve their goals, whether it is learning to play for enjoyment, self-expression, achievement (e.g. Royal Conservatory Examination Preparation) or competition (e.g. Kiwanis Music Festival).
Before registering, please review the outline provided to the right (below, on mobile) about the upcoming studio year.

“We are so lucky to find Lara for Alessandra’s piano teacher. She makes learning the piano not only about playing the notes, but about making music, with meaning and emotion. Lara provides an encouraging and supportive environment where Alessandra is challenged to ask questions, to try new thing, to learn from her mistakes, and to take pride in her accomplishments.”
Sonja (Alessandra’s mother)
“Our daughter, Keeley, started her piano lessons in the fall of 2010. Lara makes learning to play the piano a fun and exciting experience which keeps Kelley motivated and looking forward to her lesson each week. We love listening to Keeley playing the songs she has learned!”
Julie (Keeley’s mother)
“My daughter has excelled in music since she started working with Lara MacMillan and has become a skilled, confident performer.
Lara does everything a good teacher does. She teaches to my daughter’s current level, helps her set goals, aims to see improvement in her, holds her up to high standards; changes the program or approach if the previous one isn’t working; challenges her to do what she didn’t think she could do; tells her when she has mastered the concepts; and tells her what she can do to get even better. At times, I have wished that Lara was on staff with me at my school.
But honestly, I’m glad that my daughter gets Lara to herself.”
Michele (Georgia’s mother)
“Lara has taught all three of my children and expanded their musicianship according to their interests, whether it be in piano, voice, guitar, or a combination thereof. She is a gifted teacher – engaging and kind, but also firm and with high expectations for commitment to practicing and progressing through the material. She exposes her students to performance, competition and exam opportunities, and makes these experiences fun and rewarding. She’s committed to helping each student find their own path and to walking beside them in a supportive and encouraging manner.”
Sarah (Julia’s mother)
“I spent numerous years taking vocal lessons with Lara and am so thankful for every minute I had working with her. Her warm and animated personality pushes you to reach beyond your potential to accomplish things you didn’t even know you had in you.
She is an excellent mentor, committed to her students’ growth both as musicians and as people.
Lara taught me many valuable lessons and provided techniques for my vocals and song writing that I will continue to use indefinitely!”
